When you start planning a vacation to Hainan, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. The map shows a long coastline dotted with hotels, but how do you figure out where your “spot” really is? One bay might offer azure waters and total tranquility, another could be all about parties and dumpling joints on every corner, and then there’s a third where swimming is actually forbidden, but the hotels are just out of this world.

So, to help you make the right choice, we’ve broken down Sanya’s four main resort areas. Let’s figure out which bay is absolutely perfect for your vacation style.

1. Dadonghai: The Golden Mean and the Hub of Action

If this is your first time heading to Hainan, you don’t speak Chinese, and you want everything super convenient — then this is your place. Dadonghai is easily the most laid-back and vibrant bay. It’s got this endless holiday vibe, with cafes, music, shopping malls, and the beach all just a stone’s throw away.

Sea and Beach: The beach here is pretty decent, sandy, but it often gets packed. The water’s clean, for sure, but don’t expect that “crystal clear” look you see in Maldives photos. On the flip side, you can almost always swim, and the waves are usually pretty moderate.

Who it’s for: Young people, active travelers, those who don’t want to just chill in their hotel, and anyone who loves an evening stroll. Downsides: It’s crowded, noisy, and the beach can feel a bit cramped sometimes.

What to Do and See

💡 Pro Tip: Craving fresh fruit? Don’t buy it pre-cut on the beach (it’s overpriced). Just walk about 10 minutes further into town, past the “Pineapple” mall – you’ll find local prices there, usually 2-3 times cheaper.

Where to Stay

In Dadonghai, hotels often aren’t right on the beachfront, but it’s usually just a short walk to the sea.

2. Yalong Bay: Upscale Relaxation and the Best Sea

Dreaming of white sand and clear turquoise waters? Then Yalong Bay (Yalunwan) is your spot. People often call this bay the “Chinese Maldives.” It’s the most prestigious and priciest resort area, sitting about 25 km from downtown Sanya. It’s quiet, upscale, and absolutely stunning here.

Sea and Beach: Hands down, the best on the island. You’ll find a wide shoreline, fine light sand, and a gentle entry into the water. The water here is super clear, making it perfect for snorkeling.

Who it’s for: Families with kids, honeymooners, and anyone who loves comfort and a peaceful beach vacation. Downsides: Prices for everything (food, hotels) are higher than in the city. And honestly, there isn’t much entertainment outside of the hotels themselves.

What to Do and See

💡 Pro Tip: Eating at restaurants within 5-star hotels can get pricey. In the evening, grab a taxi (they’re not expensive here) and head over to the La Floret area or the Outlets – you’ll find a huge selection of cafes with much more reasonable prices.

Top Hotels

This is pretty much the domain of global hotel chains.

3. Sanya Bay: Sunsets and Local Flavor

This is the longest bay, stretching 22 km! It’s also the closest one to the airport and Sanya city center. It’s definitely the go-to for budget-conscious travelers and anyone looking to really dive into authentic Chinese life.

Sea and Beach: The beach here is huge and often pretty empty, but the water can be a bit murky because of the sand. Important detail: almost all the hotels are separated from the beach by a road. Still, the sand here is super firm, which is actually really nice for a run.

Who it’s for: Budget travelers, those who love long walks, and photographers. Downsides: You’ll find sand flies (those pesky little midges) more often here than in other bays (seriously, use bug spray!), and there’s some road noise.

What to Do and See

💡 Pro Tip: Sanya Bay is the sunset bay. People come from all over the island specifically to capture photos of the setting sun against the backdrop of the “Coconut Corridor” palm alley. The best shots are usually between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.

Where to Stay

4. Haitang Bay: Luxury, Duty-Free, and… Waves

This is the newest and still-developing bay, located about 30 km from the city. Think “heavy luxury” here: massive hotel grounds, private villas, and a real sense of seclusion.

Sea and Beach: Heads up! This is the main catch. The beaches here are wild and absolutely beautiful, but swimming in the sea in Haitang Bay is almost always forbidden because of strong undertows and waves. So, you’ll be soaking up the sun on the beach, but your actual swimming will happen in the hotel pools.

Who it’s for: Those who aren’t huge fans of sea swimming, shopaholics, SPA lovers, and anyone seeking solitude. Downsides: It’s a bit far from the city, and you can’t swim in the sea.

What to Do and See

💡 Pro Tip: If you’re staying in another bay, you absolutely have to set aside a day to visit Haitang Bay for the Atlantis water park and some serious shopping. And don’t forget your passport for those Duty-Free purchases!
