When you start planning a vacation to Hainan, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. The map shows a long coastline dotted with hotels, but how do you figure out where your “spot” really is? One bay might offer azure waters and total tranquility, another could be all about parties and dumpling joints on every corner, and then there’s a third where swimming is actually forbidden, but the hotels are just out of this world.
So, to help you make the right choice, we’ve broken down Sanya’s four main resort areas. Let’s figure out which bay is absolutely perfect for your vacation style.
1. Dadonghai: The Golden Mean and the Hub of Action

If this is your first time heading to Hainan, you don’t speak Chinese, and you want everything super convenient — then this is your place. Dadonghai is easily the most laid-back and vibrant bay. It’s got this endless holiday vibe, with cafes, music, shopping malls, and the beach all just a stone’s throw away.
Sea and Beach: The beach here is pretty decent, sandy, but it often gets packed. The water’s clean, for sure, but don’t expect that “crystal clear” look you see in Maldives photos. On the flip side, you can almost always swim, and the waves are usually pretty moderate.
Who it’s for: Young people, active travelers, those who don’t want to just chill in their hotel, and anyone who loves an evening stroll. Downsides: It’s crowded, noisy, and the beach can feel a bit cramped sometimes.
What to Do and See
- “Pineapple” Shopping Center (Gold Mall): That famous building shaped like a golden pineapple. Inside, you’ll find food courts, shops, and a really great supermarket.
- Food Square: In the evenings, dozens of stalls open up, serving freshly grilled seafood. So good!
- Promenade: A long strip of bars with live music stretches right along the sea.
💡 Pro Tip: Craving fresh fruit? Don’t buy it pre-cut on the beach (it’s overpriced). Just walk about 10 minutes further into town, past the “Pineapple” mall – you’ll find local prices there, usually 2-3 times cheaper.
Where to Stay
In Dadonghai, hotels often aren’t right on the beachfront, but it’s usually just a short walk to the sea.
- Sunshine Resort Intime Sanya: A classic. First line, its own garden – perfect for families.
- Harman Resort Hotel Sanya: A stylish hotel located right in the “Pineapple” shopping center. It boasts a gorgeous rooftop pool with sea views.
- Barry Boutique Hotel: A really good budget-friendly option, just a couple of minutes from the beach.
2. Yalong Bay: Upscale Relaxation and the Best Sea

Dreaming of white sand and clear turquoise waters? Then Yalong Bay (Yalunwan) is your spot. People often call this bay the “Chinese Maldives.” It’s the most prestigious and priciest resort area, sitting about 25 km from downtown Sanya. It’s quiet, upscale, and absolutely stunning here.
Sea and Beach: Hands down, the best on the island. You’ll find a wide shoreline, fine light sand, and a gentle entry into the water. The water here is super clear, making it perfect for snorkeling.
Who it’s for: Families with kids, honeymooners, and anyone who loves comfort and a peaceful beach vacation. Downsides: Prices for everything (food, hotels) are higher than in the city. And honestly, there isn’t much entertainment outside of the hotels themselves.
What to Do and See
- Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park: This is where you’ll find that famous glass bridge and incredible bird’s-eye views of the entire bay.
- Rose Valley: A massive park with rose plantations, perfect for getting some truly stunning photos.
- La Floret: A shopping street packed with restaurants and shops – it’s basically the hub of activity in the bay.
💡 Pro Tip: Eating at restaurants within 5-star hotels can get pricey. In the evening, grab a taxi (they’re not expensive here) and head over to the La Floret area or the Outlets – you’ll find a huge selection of cafes with much more reasonable prices.
Top Hotels
This is pretty much the domain of global hotel chains.
- MGM Grand Sanya: A real party spot, super trendy, with active entertainment and poolside parties.
- Sheraton Sanya Yalong Bay Resort: It’s got a huge, lush green territory, making it absolutely ideal for family vacations.
- Huayu Resort & Spa Yalong Bay: Located on the second line, but right in the heart of the shopping street. Excellent value for money, honestly.
3. Sanya Bay: Sunsets and Local Flavor

This is the longest bay, stretching 22 km! It’s also the closest one to the airport and Sanya city center. It’s definitely the go-to for budget-conscious travelers and anyone looking to really dive into authentic Chinese life.
Sea and Beach: The beach here is huge and often pretty empty, but the water can be a bit murky because of the sand. Important detail: almost all the hotels are separated from the beach by a road. Still, the sand here is super firm, which is actually really nice for a run.
Who it’s for: Budget travelers, those who love long walks, and photographers. Downsides: You’ll find sand flies (those pesky little midges) more often here than in other bays (seriously, use bug spray!), and there’s some road noise.
What to Do and See
- Phoenix Island: This is a complex of artificial islands featuring futuristic skyscrapers that put on a cool light show every evening.
- “Ends of the Earth” Park (Tianya Haijiao): You’ll find this park right at the end of the bay.
- Fish Market: Here, you can snag the freshest seafood and then have it cooked up for next to nothing at a nearby cafe.
💡 Pro Tip: Sanya Bay is the sunset bay. People come from all over the island specifically to capture photos of the setting sun against the backdrop of the “Coconut Corridor” palm alley. The best shots are usually between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
Where to Stay
- Pullman Oceanview Sanya Bay Resort & Spa: This is one of the few high-end hotels in the area, and it even has its own tunnel under the road to the beach. Pretty cool!
- Wyndham Sanya Bay: A huge hotel with big pools, super popular with families.
- Howard Johnson Resort Sanya Bay: That famous giant hotel you can spot from a mile away.
4. Haitang Bay: Luxury, Duty-Free, and… Waves

This is the newest and still-developing bay, located about 30 km from the city. Think “heavy luxury” here: massive hotel grounds, private villas, and a real sense of seclusion.
Sea and Beach: Heads up! This is the main catch. The beaches here are wild and absolutely beautiful, but swimming in the sea in Haitang Bay is almost always forbidden because of strong undertows and waves. So, you’ll be soaking up the sun on the beach, but your actual swimming will happen in the hotel pools.
Who it’s for: Those who aren’t huge fans of sea swimming, shopaholics, SPA lovers, and anyone seeking solitude. Downsides: It’s a bit far from the city, and you can’t swim in the sea.
What to Do and See
- Atlantis Sanya: This isn’t just a hotel; it’s an entire world, complete with an aquarium and the best water park on the island (accessible to everyone with tickets).
- CDF Mall: The largest Duty-Free complex in the world. People flock here from all over Hainan for cosmetics and big brands.
- Wuzhizhou Island (Pirate Island): The ferry to the island actually departs right from this bay.
💡 Pro Tip: If you’re staying in another bay, you absolutely have to set aside a day to visit Haitang Bay for the Atlantis water park and some serious shopping. And don’t forget your passport for those Duty-Free purchases!
Where to Stay
- Atlantis Sanya: Staying here gets you unlimited access to the water park and aquarium. It’s pricey, no doubt, but totally worth it, in my opinion.
- The Westin Sanya Haitang Bay Resort: It’s within walking distance of the Duty-Free Mall. Plus, it has this enormous lagoon pool where you can even go kayaking!
- Sofitel Sanya Leeman Resort: French chic, absolutely amazing breakfasts, and a truly beautiful property.
