Koh Samui has a few hundred hotels squeezed onto a 25 by 21 kilometer island, and the beach you pick decides most of your trip. Chaweng is the long, busy strip with nightlife. Lamai is calmer and cheaper. Bophut and Bang Rak sit near the airport and the pier for Koh Phangan. Choeng Mon is a quiet cove where the big five-star resorts cluster. Bang Po, on the north-west coast, is where you go when you do not want to see anyone.
Ten hotels below cover every one of those beaches and every budget from a three-star guesthouse to the Ritz-Carlton. Each one holds a guest score of 8.5 or better across hundreds of reviews. Distances to the airport and the beach are listed because on Samui they matter more than star ratings: a taxi from the airport to Lamai costs about 500 baht, to Choeng Mon 200.
Samui also does well in the numbers. Our study of Thai hotel guest scores puts the island ahead of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket on average review score, mostly because the resorts here are smaller and newer.
Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort

Wild Cottages is a five-star property in the hills behind Bophut, about 2.6 km inland from Fisherman’s Village and 7 km from the airport. It is built around an elephant sanctuary, so the view from the terrace is jungle and hills rather than sea, and the animals are part of the stay rather than a tour you buy. An outdoor pool, a garden, a spa and a bar cover the resort side. Free private parking is a real advantage here, because you will want a car or scooter to get to the beach.
Rooms are cottages with air conditioning, a safe, a flat-screen TV, a desk, a coffee machine, a fridge and a minibar. Bathrooms have a shower and free toiletries. Breakfast is à la carte, continental or Asian. Its restaurant serves French and Thai food with vegetarian and gluten-free options, which matters up here since the nearest alternative is a drive away. Best suited to couples who want quiet and animals over beach access.
Kimpton Kitalay Samui

Kimpton Kitalay is IHG’s five-star resort on Choeng Mon, 200 meters from the water on the calmest swimming beach in the north-east. Choeng Mon is a small cove: a dozen restaurants, no bars to speak of, and a 10-minute drive to Chaweng if you want noise. Guests get free bikes, a large outdoor pool, a gym, a kids’ club, airport transfers and free private parking. A garden, a terrace and a bar round out the grounds.
Every room has air conditioning, a safe, a flat-screen TV, a desk, a coffee machine, a fridge and a minibar. Bathrooms come with a bidet and a shower. Some rooms face the sea, and those are the ones to ask for. Breakfast is buffet, à la carte or American. Its restaurant does Japanese, Mediterranean and seafood, with vegetarian, lactose-free and vegan menus. A sauna, table tennis and car rental are on site. Of the ten hotels here, this is the one for families who want a proper beach without leaving the resort.
The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

The Ritz-Carlton occupies 23.5 hectares on the headland at Choeng Mon, which makes it the largest resort on the island by land. Buggies move guests between the villas, the pools and the beach, and the property has its own swim reef. Rooms and villas all have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. For activities there is a fitness center, BBQ facilities, bikes and a tour desk, plus a playground, so despite the price it works for families as well as couples.
Rooms have a living area, a TV, a desk and a coffee machine, and the better categories have a terrace facing the sea. Breakfast is American style. Its restaurants lean Asian, and a business center and multilingual staff cover the practical side. Expect rates from around 15,000 baht a night in high season. This is the splurge option on the list, and the one to book for an anniversary rather than a week of beach-hopping.
Erawan Villa Hotel

Erawan Villa is a four-star hotel in Bang Rak village, and its main asset is a garden that opens straight onto the beach. Bang Rak itself is a working bay rather than a postcard: the sand is narrow, the water shallow, and the pier for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao is a few minutes away. What you get in return is an infinity pool, rooms finished in teak, BBQ facilities in the garden and on the sand, and free Wi-Fi everywhere.
Rooms have a satellite TV, a seating area and a private bathroom, and, unusually for this price, a full kitchen with an oven, a coffee machine and a microwave. For a family staying two weeks that saves real money. Continental breakfast is served, and the kitchen can cook Thai dishes on request. Reception arranges ATV rides, dive trips and boat charters. Restaurants, a 24-hour supermarket and a pharmacy are within walking distance, which is rare on Samui outside Chaweng.
Skye Beach Koh Samui

Skye Beach is a four-star hotel at Choeng Mon, 300 meters from Plai Laem Beach and 2 km from the airport, close enough that you can hear the last evening flight land. Plai Laem is a small, shallow bay next to the Wat Plai Laem temple, quieter than Choeng Mon proper. Facilities include an outdoor pool, a garden, a shared lounge, a restaurant, a terrace, a concierge, room service, airport transfers and free private parking.
Rooms have air conditioning, a safe, a flat-screen TV, a wardrobe, a coffee machine, a fridge and an oven, so simple cooking is possible. Bathrooms have a bidet and a shower. Upper-floor rooms on the sea side look out over the bay. Breakfast comes à la carte, continental or American. The hotel suits anyone with an early flight or a late arrival, and anyone who wants a smaller, cheaper alternative to the big resorts on the same cove.
Villa Labaron

Villa Labaron is a four-star villa directly on the sand at Bang Rak, with a shared outdoor pool and free Wi-Fi. Its location is the selling point: 1.8 km from the Big Buddha, 600 meters from the Samui Crocodile Farm, a 3-minute drive to Fisherman’s Village, and 1 km from the airport. Bangrak Pier is also 1 km away, and that is where the boats depart for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, so island-hoppers can walk to the ferry.
Inside there is a terrace with outdoor seating, air conditioning, a lounge area and a flat-screen TV. A kitchen with a microwave, a fridge and a dining area makes self-catering easy, and the supermarkets of Bang Rak are close. Sun loungers are provided for the pool and the beach, and airport transfers can be booked, though at 1 km a taxi costs almost nothing. Groups of four to six get the best value here, since the villa price splits.
Rosa Mar

Rosa Mar is a three-star hotel in Lamai, an 800-meter walk from the beach, and the best-value entry on this list: a guest score of 9 out of 10 from 177 reviews at a price that is usually a third of the Choeng Mon resorts. Lamai is Samui’s second town, with a Sunday night market, cheaper restaurants than Chaweng and a long beach that is rougher in the north and calmer in the south. Facilities are an outdoor pool, a garden, a terrace, free private parking and free Wi-Fi, with a paid airport transfer on request.
Rooms are simple but complete: air conditioning, a safe, a flat-screen TV, a wardrobe and a kettle, with a shower and free toiletries in the bathroom. For sightseeing, the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks are 4.3 km away and the Na Muang waterfalls about 15 minutes by scooter. The airport is 11 km, or roughly 500 baht by taxi. Pick this one if you plan to spend your money on the island rather than on the room.
UniQue BoutiQue Resort

UniQue BoutiQue is a small five-star hotel at Bang Rak, 1.4 km from the Big Buddha and 2 km from the airport, built for people who care about design more than beach frontage. Windows face the hills behind the bay. On site are an outdoor pool, a gym, a garden, a terrace, a restaurant and a bar, with room service, a concierge, free private parking and free Wi-Fi.
Rooms have air conditioning, a safe, a flat-screen TV, a wardrobe, a coffee machine, a fridge and a minibar, plus a shower and free toiletries. A sauna is available. From here the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, Fisherman’s Village and the Bang Rak pier are all within a 10-minute drive, which makes it a good base for a first visit built around the main sights rather than one beach.
Bluemango Pool Villa & Resort Koh Samui

Bluemango is a three-star resort in the hills behind Chaweng, 2.3 km from Chaweng Beach and 2 km from the airport. Being off the strip is the point: you get an outdoor pool, a garden, a shared lounge, a shared kitchen, a restaurant, room service, free parking and free Wi-Fi at a price the beachfront cannot match, and Chaweng’s restaurants and bars are a 10-minute scooter ride down the hill. Its guest score is 9 out of 10 from 171 reviews.
Rooms have a fridge, a minibar, a kettle, air conditioning, a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV and a safe, with a shower and slippers. Some rooms look toward the sea from the hillside. Breakfast is à la carte. A hot tub and a terrace cover the evenings. This is the pick for a couple on a budget who want a pool and quiet nights but still want Chaweng within reach.
Vows Villa Beachfront

Vows Villa is a three-star hotel on the sand at Ban Bang Po on the north-west coast, 18 km and about 40 minutes from the airport. Bang Po is the opposite of Chaweng: a long, shallow, empty beach with a reef offshore, a few seafood restaurants on stilts, and sunsets over Koh Phangan. The hotel has an outdoor pool, a garden, its own stretch of beach, a restaurant, a shared kitchen, a shared lounge and free Wi-Fi.
Rooms have a fridge, a minibar, a kettle, air conditioning, a desk and a safe, with a bidet, a shower, a hairdryer and free toiletries in the bathroom. Sea-view rooms open onto the beach, 10 meters away. Breakfast is à la carte or continental. A paid airport transfer can be arranged, and you will want a scooter for anything beyond the village. Book it for a week of doing nothing, not for nightlife.

Two practical notes before booking. High season runs December to March and again in July and August; rates at the five-star resorts roughly double then, while the three-star hotels move much less. And the monsoon on Samui is October to December, later than on Phuket, so a November trip will be cheaper and wetter. Whatever the hotel, ask for a scooter rental at reception on arrival: at 200-300 baht a day it turns every hotel on this list into a base for the whole island.
