Thailand has no shortage of hotel guides. What it lacks is a straight answer to a simple question. In which city does the average guest walk away happiest?
We took the most booked hotels of four Thai destinations on Booking.com and lined up their guest scores. That gave us 173 properties with 176,733 verified reviews between them, recorded from April to July 2026. One island came out far ahead.
Koh Samui wins, and it is not close

Guests on Koh Samui rate their stays at 8.36 out of 10 on average. More than a third of the island’s popular hotels hold a 9 or better. No other Thai city in our data comes near that.
Phuket props up the table. Only 4% of its big hotels reach a 9, the weakest share we found in the country. Bangkok does barely better at 8%.
Why the gap? Samui’s sample leans hard toward resorts. Of its 28 popular hotels, 13 sit in the top price tiers and none in the cheap ones. People pay more and get more. Phuket and Bangkok carry a long tail of tired mid-range towers, and the average shows it.
Risk tells the same story from the other side. Not one popular hotel on Samui scores below 7. In Bangkok, six of the fifty do. Book blind in the capital and roughly one stay in eight will disappoint you.
Stars help, but less than you would hope

Five star properties in Thailand average 8.20 against 7.65 for three star ones. Half a point is real. It is also smaller than the gap between cities. Moving a trip from Phuket to Samui gains you more than moving up two whole star classes.
Review counts deserve a glance too. Baiyoke Sky in Bangkok, the most reviewed hotel in our Thai data, holds a score of 8 across 10,600 opinions. Crowds do not chase the best rated places. They chase the famous ones.
When to go changes what you get
Scores are half the picture. Thai weather splits the country into two systems, and room rates follow the rain.

Note the split in that last row. Samui sits on the gulf coast, so its heavy rain lands in October through December. Phuket takes its monsoon from May to October. When one island is wet, the other is often dry. A two week trip can dodge the rain by picking the right coast.
Prices move with the sky. Beach resorts cut their rates by a third or more in the wet months, and some of the 9 rated places turn into bargains then. Showers tend to arrive in bursts of an hour rather than as all day walls of water. With flexible dates, late April and early November give the best mix of weather and price.
Cheap rooms are a gamble in Bangkok
Bangkok’s budget tier averages 7.29 against 7.66 for its upscale tier. Chiang Mai shows the same tilt at 7.38 against 8.00. Phuket is the odd one out. Its 23 cheap hotels average 7.43, close to the expensive ones, so saving money there costs you little comfort.
A few budget places break the pattern. Citichic Sukhumvit 13 in Bangkok holds a 9 from 605 reviews at a $$ rate. Baan Sutra Guesthouse in Phuket does the same from 915 reviews. Such finds exist, but they book out early.
The safest bookings by city
Percentages are useful. Names are better. Every hotel below held a 9 in our data with a deep pile of reviews behind it.

One of them deserves a footnote. The Memory at On On is the Phuket old town hotel that appeared in the film The Beach. It charges mid range prices, and close to two thousand guests still rate it a 9.
How to use these numbers
Three habits follow from the data. Sort by score, then check the review count before anything else. A 9 backed by fifty opinions tells you less than an 8.5 backed by two thousand.
Second, hold the 7.5 line in Bangkok and Phuket unless a place has some other draw you care about. Below it, complaints about noise and worn rooms pile up fast.
Third, trust Chiang Mai. Only one hotel there fell below 7, so a mistake is hard to make. Its problem is the calendar, not the rooms. Come outside the smoke months and the odds sit with you.

All figures are Booking.com guest scores gathered between April and July 2026. Samples favour popular places, so a city’s full inventory may differ.
