Ask travellers to name China’s best hotel city and most will say Shanghai. Guest reviews point somewhere else entirely, to a small town among sandstone pillars and mountain mist. We did not see that coming when we began to count.
Our dataset covers the most booked hotels of five Chinese destinations on Booking.com: 211 properties and 81,426 verified reviews, recorded between April and July 2026.
A national park town outscores the megacities

Zhangjiajie’s popular hotels average 8.72, and 72% of them hold a 9 or better. Shanghai, its nearest rival, manages 18%. Beijing manages 10%. Not one hotel in the park town drops below 7.
And it does all of this at the cheap end of the market too. Twenty budget hotels in our sample average 8.65, almost level with the upscale tier. A hostel five minutes from the park entrance holds a 9 from 620 reviews. Two mid priced boutique inns match it.

Forget the stars in China

Here is the oddest number in our China data. A three star hotel averages 8.04 and a five star one averages 8.14. One tenth of a point separates them. For comparison, the same spread reaches 1.42 points in the Emirates.
Two forces drive this. New buildings go up so fast that a three star property is often younger and fresher than a five star one across the street. And the five star label covers everything from true luxury to ageing convention blocks, so the class means little on its own. Read the score and the date of recent reviews. Skip the stars.
Shanghai is the safest big city bet
Among the giants Shanghai leads at 8.06. Its handful of budget hotels averages 8.17, a touch above its own upscale tier. Green Court Residence City Center holds a 9 from 1,687 reviews at a $$ rate. Pair those odds with our three day Shanghai plan and a first visit is hard to spoil.
Volume hides one caution. Radisson Collection Hyland on Nanjing Road is the most reviewed hotel in our China data at 4,380 opinions, and it scores an 8 rather than a 9. Fame parks you in the middle of the pack here. The quiet residences a street away rate higher.
Chongqing punishes the cheap booking
Chongqing looks fine at 7.91 overall. But when you split it by tier, a trap appears. Budget places average 6.86 while upscale ones average 8.19, a spread of 1.33 points, the widest in our China data.
You should pay up there. Rooms on the 30th floor come with the river views that the cheap towers cannot give you, and our Chongqing weekend guide shows where to point the budget. Glenview ITC Plaza, the city’s most reviewed hotel, holds a 9 across 1,233 opinions and makes a fair benchmark for what the upper tier should cost.
Beijing and Hainan hold the middle
Beijing averages 7.96 with little drama between any of its tiers. Its old city hotels near the Forbidden City draw the deepest review piles, and only one property in the whole sample fell below 7. Our guide to day trips out of Beijing pairs well with a base there.
Hainan’s resort strip reaches 7.98, and two cheap Sanya finds hold a 9, a beach resort and a backpacker hostel. Mind the calendar more than the map there. Typhoon season runs from August into October, and the right months for Hainan are covered in our seasonal guide.
Crowds move the calendar
Timing in China is less about weather than about other travellers. Two windows to avoid stand above the rest. Golden Week, the first week of October, floods Zhangjiajie’s trails and doubles its room rates. Chinese New Year does the same to Sanya, since half the north flies south for the holiday.
For the park town itself, April to June and September to November give clear paths and open views. Summer brings rain and fog, though the mist is part of the postcard. Winter cuts the crowds to nothing and dusts the pillars with snow, and the hotels stay cheap.
